Overview
Capitol Stewardship
The Bureau of the State House (BSH) is the state agency responsible for the preservation, maintenance, and operation of the Massachusetts State House. Operating under the Executive Office for Administration and Finance, the Bureau serves as the dedicated caretaker of this National Historic Landmark. Their work ensures that the building remains a safe, functional, and dignified environment for the Governor, the Legislature, state employees, and the visiting public 🏛️.
Operations and Security
The Bureau manages a wide range of facility services, including custodial work, mechanical system repairs, and groundskeeping for the Capitol’s 6.7-acre site. They work in tandem with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Rangers and the Massachusetts State Police to enforce security protocols and manage access to the building. The BSH is also responsible for coordinating all events held within the State House, from legislative hearings to public rallies and ceremonial functions.
Historical Preservation
Beyond daily operations, the Bureau is tasked with the delicate job of restoring the building’s architectural and artistic features. This includes maintaining the iconic golden dome, the Hall of Flags, and the historic artwork throughout the complex. They collaborate with the Massachusetts Historical Commission to ensure that all renovations respect the integrity of Charles Bulfinch’s original 1798 design while upgrading systems for modern accessibility and energy efficiency ⚡.
