Overview
Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA)
The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) is the cabinet-level secretariat responsible for preserving and protecting the natural resources of Massachusetts. Headquartered in the Saltonstall Building at 100 Cambridge Street in Boston, Massachusetts, the EEA oversees the state’s environmental and energy agencies. It is the only state cabinet in the nation that combines energy and environmental departments under one secretary, facilitating a unified approach to climate change, clean energy, and conservation. The office leads the Commonwealth’s initiatives to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and safeguards the state’s air, water, and land.
Departments and Agencies
The EEA directs the operations of six major state agencies:
- Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR): Managing state parks, forests, and beaches.
- Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP): Regulating pollution and waste management.
- Department of Energy Resources (DOER): Promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
- Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR): Supporting the state’s agricultural industry.
- Department of Fish and Game (DFG): Managing wildlife and fisheries.
- Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM): Protecting coastal and marine habitats.
Location and Access
The EEA is located near Government Center. As a state government office building, visitors to 100 Cambridge Street must pass through security screening in the lobby, including metal detectors and ID verification. The office primarily handles policy, administration, and oversight rather than direct public counter services (like fishing licenses, which are often handled online or at specific division offices). Public transit is the most convenient option, with the Bowdoin and Government Center subway stations nearby.
