Overview
Massachusetts Architectural Access Board
The Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (AAB) is a regulatory body within the state’s Division of Occupational Licensure. Headquartered at 1000 Washington Street in Boston, Massachusetts, the Board plays a pivotal role in ensuring that buildings and facilities throughout the Commonwealth are accessible to persons with disabilities. The AAB is responsible for developing, updating, and enforcing the Rules and Regulations for Architectural Access (521 CMR), which mandate accessibility standards for the construction, reconstruction, and alteration of public and private buildings that serve the general public.
Key Responsibilities
The Board operates with the authority to investigate complaints and grant variances. Its primary functions include:
- Code Enforcement: Investigating complaints filed by the public regarding violations of accessibility standards in locations such as schools, restaurants, municipal buildings, and housing complexes.
- Variance Reviews: Evaluating applications from property owners and developers who seek exceptions to specific code requirements due to technical infeasibility or excessive cost.
- Adjudicatory Hearings: Conducting public hearings to resolve disputes and determine the appropriate application of accessibility laws.
- Advisory Opinions: Providing official interpretations of 521 CMR to building inspectors, architects, and the public.
Location and Visiting
The AAB is located in a state office building in the South End district. Visitors attending hearings or conducting business in person must undergo security screening upon entry, which typically includes metal detectors and ID verification. The facility is fully accessible. While limited metered street parking is available in the vicinity, it is often scarce. The office is well-served by public transportation, located near the Tufts Medical Center and Herald Street stations.
