Overview
Regulating Combat Sports
The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission (MSAC), often referred to as the Boxing Commission, is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing professional and amateur unarmed combat sports in the Commonwealth. Operating under the Division of Occupational Licensure, the Commission is now located at One Federal Street in Boston’s Financial District (having moved from Ashburton Place). 🥊 Its mission is to ensure the safety, fairness, and integrity of boxing, mixed martial arts (MMA), and Southeast Asian kickboxing events.
Licensing and Sanctioning
- Fighter Licensing: The MSAC issues licenses to professional and amateur fighters. Applicants must undergo rigorous medical examinations, including neurological and ophthalmological testing, to ensure they are fit to compete. 🏥
- Event Officials: The Commission also licenses and assigns referees, judges, timekeepers, and ring doctors to ensure that matches are conducted according to established rules and safety protocols.
- Promoter Regulation: Event promoters must be licensed and bonded to hold events in Massachusetts. The Commission reviews fight cards and approves venues to guarantee safety standards are met.
Safety and Compliance
The MSAC enforces strict regulations regarding weight classes, equipment (such as gloves and hand wraps), and pre-fight medical screenings. Commission inspectors are present at every sanctioned event to conduct weigh-ins and monitor the locker rooms ⚖️. They also oversee the Boxers’ Fund, which provides financial assistance to former boxers in need. Visitors to the office for licensing matters should be prepared for security screening at the building entrance. Note that many applications and renewals are now processed through the agency’s online e-place portal.
