Overview
About the Marine Section
The Massachusetts State Police Marine Section is a specialized unit within the Division of Field Services, responsible for law enforcement and public safety on the Commonwealth’s waterways. Strategically located at 200 Beverly Street, adjacent to the New Charles River Dam and TD Garden, this unit serves as the primary guardian of the varied and busy waters of the Metropolitan Boston area.
Operational Responsibilities
The Marine Section’s duties are diverse and critical to maritime safety:
- Patrol: Routine patrols of the Charles River, Mystic River, and Boston Harbor to enforce boating laws and ensure the safety of recreational boaters.
- Search and Rescue (SAR): Providing rapid response to distress calls, capsized vessels, and medical emergencies on the water.
- Port Security: conducting high-value asset escorts, including the protection of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tankers transiting the harbor, and maintaining a counter-terrorism presence.
- Event Safety: Managing marine traffic during major events like the Head of the Charles Regatta and Fourth of July fireworks.
Fleet and Capabilities
The unit operates a fleet of specialized vessels, ranging from large coastal patrol boats capable of operating in rough seas to smaller, agile rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) designed for river operations. Troopers in the Marine Section are highly trained in maritime navigation, underwater recovery, and tactical boat handling.
Location and Access
The facility is situated in the North End/West End border area. While it is an operational police station, it is not a standard walk-in center for general administrative services. The location offers immediate water access for the unit’s vessels.
- Public Transit: The station is steps away from North Station, making it accessible via the MBTA Green and Orange Lines and the Commuter Rail.
- Parking: There is no public parking available at the facility. Visitors must use nearby commercial garages.
