About the Supreme Judicial Court Clerk for the Commonwealth
The Commonwealth’s Highest Appellate Court
The Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) Clerk’s Office for the Commonwealth is located within the historic John Adams Courthouse at Pemberton Square. As the highest appellate court in Massachusetts, the SJC holds the ultimate judicial authority in the state. The Clerk for the Commonwealth manages the full bench docket, which includes all appeals entered directly or transferred to the SJC, as well as matters regarding the admission of attorneys to the Massachusetts Bar. This office is distinct from the Clerk for Suffolk County, which handles single-justice matters.
- Case Management: The office processes all filings for the full court, including briefs, motions, and applications for further appellate review.
- Bar Admission: Handles petitions for admission to the bar and issues Certificates of Admission and Good Standing for attorneys.
- Oral Arguments: The Clerk’s office coordinates the scheduling of oral arguments, which typically take place the first week of every month from September through May.
Historic Significance and Jurisdiction
Established in 1692, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is the oldest appellate court in continuous existence in the Western Hemisphere. The Clerk’s Office plays a pivotal role in maintaining the records of this historic institution. The jurisdiction is statewide, handling the most critical legal questions affecting the Commonwealth. The office ensures that the procedural requirements of appellate review are met, serving as the primary liaison between the Justices and the parties involved in litigation.
Security and Visiting Policies
Visitors to the John Adams Courthouse must undergo rigorous security screening. All persons and bags are subject to search via x-ray and metal detectors. Cell phones are generally permitted but must be silenced in courtrooms; however, photography and video recording are strictly prohibited without prior judicial authorization.
