The Keeper of City Records
Vital Records and Licensing
The Worcester City Clerk’s Office is the primary custodian of official municipal records, serving as the central hub for vital statistics and legislative documentation. Located within the historic City Hall, this office is the first stop for residents needing to document life’s major milestones. The Clerk is responsible for recording, maintaining, and issuing certified copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates. Beyond vital records, the office manages the issuance of various municipal licenses, including dog licenses and business certificates (DBAs) for sole proprietorships and partnerships.
Legislative and Election Services
As the clerk to the City Council, the department prepares agendas, records minutes, and maintains the official text of city ordinances and zoning maps. The office also plays a pivotal role in the democratic process, overseeing election administration, voter registration, and the swearing-in of public officials.
- Marriage Intentions: Couples planning to marry in Massachusetts must file their intentions here at least three days in advance.
- Animal Control Administration: Processes annual dog licensing to ensure public safety and rabies vaccination compliance.
- Archives: Preserves historical city documents dating back to the city’s founding, accessible for genealogical and legal research.
Visiting the Clerk
The office is situated in Room 206 of City Hall. Visitors should be prepared for security screening upon entering the building. While many services, such as ordering certified copies, are now available through their online portal, in-person services offer immediate assistance for complex filings. 🗳️
