Overview
About Worcester License Commission
The Worcester License Commission serves as the primary regulatory body responsible for issuing and overseeing licenses for various business activities within the City of Worcester. Working in conjunction with the Inspectional Services Division, the commission ensures that businesses comply with state laws and local ordinances to protect the health, safety, and order of the community. This board holds the authority to grant, deny, suspend, or revoke licenses based on compliance and public hearings.
Licensing Services
The commission handles applications for a wide range of regulated activities, including:
- Alcohol & Liquor Licenses: Reviewing and approving permits for restaurants, bars, package stores, and special one-day events (Section 12 and Section 15 licenses).
- Common Victualer Licenses: Required for any establishment that prepares and serves food to be consumed on the premises.
- Entertainment Licenses: Permits for live music, karaoke, dancing, and other forms of public entertainment in business venues.
- Auto & Lodging: Licensing for lodging houses, automatic amusement devices, and car dealerships (Class I, II, III).
Meetings and Operations
The License Commission typically meets twice a month on Thursday mornings at City Hall. These public hearings are critical for new applicants and for addressing violations. Residents and business owners can attend to voice support or concerns regarding licensing matters. All applications, including abutters’ notifications and detailed floor plans, must be submitted to the Inspectional Services Division prior to these meetings.
