Overview
Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks
The Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks (DPW&P) is the backbone of the city's infrastructure, responsible for maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of public spaces. Headquartered with a customer service center on East Worcester Street, the department manages a vast array of essential municipal services ranging from street maintenance to waste management. The DPW&P ensures that Worcester's 400+ miles of roads are plowable in winter and paved in summer, while also overseeing the city's complex water and sewer systems. This agency is the primary contact for residents reporting potholes, missed trash collections, or park maintenance issues.
Waste and Recycling Services
The department enforces the city's 'Pay-As-You-Throw' waste reduction program. Residents must use specific yellow trash bags for non-recyclable waste, a policy designed to encourage recycling and reduce landfill usage. The DPW&P manages:
- Curbside Collection: Weekly pickup of yellow trash bags and single-stream recycling bins.
- Residential Drop-off Center: A facility for bulk waste, yard waste, and hazardous materials disposal (located on Millbury Street, appointment often required).
- Bag Distribution: Overseeing the distribution of official city trash bags to local retailers.
Parks and Engineering
Beyond utilities, the department is the steward of Worcester's renowned park system, including Elm Park and Green Hill Park. The Parks Division maintains playgrounds, athletic fields, and the urban forestry canopy, handling tree planting and trimming requests. The Engineering Division creates the master plans for city development, managing traffic signals, street lights, and sewer infrastructure upgrades. During winter months, the DPW&P shifts focus to emergency snow removal, implementing parking bans and coordinating a fleet of plows to keep the city moving during New England storms.
