Overview
Modern Response and Solemn Memorial
Serving the Community, Honoring the Fallen
The Franklin Street Fire Station, located at 266 Franklin Street, is one of the newest and most significant facilities in the Worcester Fire Department. Opened in November 2008, this modern station replaced the historic Brown Square Station and stands on the site of the former Worcester Cold Storage and Warehouse Co., the location of the tragic fire on December 3, 1999, which claimed the lives of six brave firefighters. The station houses several critical companies, including Engine 6, Ladder 1, Rescue 1, and Scuba 1, making it a key hub for specialized rescue operations and fire suppression in the city.
- Worcester 6 Memorial: The site features a poignant memorial dedicated to the ”Worcester 6”—the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice at this location. It serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for the community and the fire service brotherhood.
- Specialized Units: This station is the home of Rescue 1, the department’s heavy rescue unit equipped for technical rescues, vehicle extrication, and confined space incidents. It also houses the Scuba Team (Scuba 1), providing water rescue capabilities for the region.
- 24/7 Operations: The station is staffed around the clock by professional firefighters and paramedics ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice.
Location and Access
Situated near the intersection of Franklin Street and Arctic Street, the station is strategically positioned to cover the eastern side of downtown and the Grafton Hill neighborhoods. Access to the interior of the station is restricted to authorized personnel, but the exterior memorial is accessible to the public for those wishing to pay their respects. There is no public parking lot for the station itself, but street parking is available in the surrounding industrial and commercial area.
