Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA)
Connecting Central Massachusetts
The Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) is the primary public transportation provider for the City of Worcester and 36 surrounding communities. Established to provide reliable, safe, and cost-effective mobility solutions, the WRTA operates a comprehensive network of fixed-route bus services and paratransit options. The agency’s central operations are based at the WRTA Hub adjacent to Union Station, creating a seamless intermodal connection between local buses, the MBTA Commuter Rail, and intercity bus carriers.
- Fixed Route Service: Operates over 20 bus routes covering the city and suburbs.
- Paratransit: Provides door-to-door van service for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
- Fare Policy: Currently operating a fare-free program on all fixed-route buses until June 2026.
The WRTA Hub
The Hub at 60 Foster Street serves as the heartbeat of the system. This modern facility features an indoor waiting area, customer service counters, and real-time transit information screens. Passengers can transition comfortably between routes, purchase passes (for paratransit), and receive assistance from transit staff. The facility is designed with accessibility in mind, offering elevators and ADA-compliant boarding areas for all passengers.
- Customer Service: On-site assistance for route planning and lost and found.
- Bus Tracking: Integration with mobile apps for live bus location updates.
- Bike-Friendly: All fixed-route buses are equipped with bike racks to support multi-modal commuting.
Regional Impact
Beyond daily commuting, the WRTA plays a vital role in the economic vitality of the region by connecting residents to employment centers, medical facilities, schools, and shopping districts. The authority is governed by an Advisory Board representing the member communities and is funded through a combination of state, federal, and local assessments. The WRTA continues to modernize its fleet with clean-diesel and electric vehicles to reduce its environmental footprint.
