Overview
Ensuring Police Integrity and Accountability
The Bureau of Professional Standards (BOPS) serves as the Internal Affairs division for the Worcester Police Department, located within the department’s headquarters at Lincoln Square. This specialized unit is dedicated to investigating allegations of misconduct, corruption, and policy violations involving both sworn officers and civilian employees. The Bureau operates with a mandate to ensure transparency and uphold the public trust by conducting thorough, impartial investigations into all citizen complaints, ranging from discourtesy to excessive force and civil rights violations.
Filing a Complaint
The Worcester Police Department encourages any individual who witnesses or experiences police misconduct to file a report. The BOPS makes the process accessible through several channels: complaints can be filed in person at the police station, by mail, by telephone, or via the online Citizen Comment Form available on the city’s official website. The department maintains a strict policy protecting complainants from retaliation. While the Bureau handles serious investigations directly, less severe infractions may be referred to the subject officer’s chain of command for corrective action.
Facility and Security
As this office is housed within the Worcester Police Headquarters, strict security measures are in effect. All visitors entering the facility must pass through security screening, including metal detectors and bag checks. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, drugs, and often recording devices unless authorized. Visitors should be prepared to present a valid government-issued ID at the front desk. While the police station lobby is open 24/7, the administrative offices of the Bureau of Professional Standards typically operate during standard business hours.
Location and Transit
The headquarters is a prominent building located at the intersection of Main Street and Lincoln Street (Lincoln Square). The location is well-served by public transportation, with the Lincoln Square bus stop situated directly nearby, connecting to multiple WRTA routes. For those driving, there is a small visitor parking lot available on-site, as well as metered street parking and public garages in the vicinity. The building is fully compliant with ADA standards, offering wheelchair accessibility through the main entrance.
