About the Worcester Treasurer and Collector
The Worcester Treasurer and Collector of Taxes is the primary financial office for the City of Worcester, located within the historic City Hall. This department is responsible for the billing, collection, and management of all municipal funds. It serves as the central point for residents to pay real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle excise taxes, and water/sewer utility bills.
Financial Services
The office manages the city’s cash flow, payroll, and debt service. Key services available to the public include:
- Tax Collection: Processing payments for property and excise taxes.
- Parking Administration: Collection of fines for parking violations and handling of ticket appeals.
- Municipal Lien Certificates: Issuing certificates (MLC) that verify the tax status of specific properties.
Security and Access
The Treasurer’s Office is located in Room 203 of City Hall. Visitors must enter through the Main Street entrance. Be prepared for airport-style security screening, including metal detectors and bag checks. A valid ID is required to sign in at the security desk. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, pocket knives, and pepper spray.
Payment Options
Payments can be made in person using cash, money orders, or personal checks (for most bills). Credit and debit cards are accepted but typically incur a third-party convenience fee. The city also offers an online portal for most bill payments.
