Overview
Protecting Natural Resources and Public Safety
The Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) maintains a strategic regional office at 67 Millbrook Street in Worcester. As the primary enforcement agency for the Commonwealth’s environmental laws, the MEP protects the state’s waterways, public lands, and wildlife. This location serves as both an administrative hub for the inland region and a Registration Bureau office. The officers stationed here are sworn state police officers with the authority to enforce all state laws, though their primary focus remains on hunting, fishing, boating, and recreational vehicle regulations. They play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainable use of Massachusetts’ natural resources while maintaining public safety in state parks and forests.
Boat and Recreation Vehicle Registration
A primary function of the Worcester office is to assist the public with the registration and titling of recreational vehicles. This is a high-volume service center for:
- Boat Registration: Processing new registrations, renewals, and transfers for motorboats operating on Massachusetts waters.
- OHV Registration: Handling decals and titles for Off-Highway Vehicles, including ATVs, dirt bikes, and recreational utility vehicles.
- Snowmobiles: issuing mandatory registration for snowmobiles used on public and private land.
- Duplicate Titles: Assisting owners in replacing lost or damaged titles and registration cards.
Enforcement and Education
Beyond administrative services, the Environmental Police are active in the field enforcing the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR). Their duties include:
- Fish and Game Laws: Checking licenses and bag limits for hunters and anglers to prevent poaching and overfishing.
- Boating Safety: Patrolling lakes and ponds to enforce boating safety laws, including life jacket requirements and operating under the influence (OUI) checks.
- Hazardous Materials: Investigating environmental crimes such as illegal dumping or hazardous waste spills.
- Hunter Education: promoting safety courses that are mandatory for new hunters.
Visiting the Office
The Worcester Registration Bureau is located in a professional office park on Millbrook Street. Visitors should be aware that payment methods for registration fees typically include checks or money orders, and credit card terminals may be available but are subject to service fees. Security screening may not be as rigorous as a courthouse, but visitors should expect a professional law enforcement environment. It is highly recommended to have all necessary paperwork, bills of sale, and proof of tax payment ready before arriving to ensure a smooth transaction. The office operates during standard state business hours and is closed on state holidays.
