Overview
Manchester Solid Waste Drop-Off Facility
The Manchester Solid Waste Drop-Off Facility, operated by the Department of Public Works Highway Division, is the primary transfer station for the City of Manchester. Located at 500 Dunbarton Road, this facility provides a designated area for residents and qualified local businesses to dispose of materials that are not accepted in regular curbside trash or recycling collections. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and environmental compliance by offering a safe and regulated site for the disposal of bulky waste, construction debris, and specific recyclable materials.
Permits and Eligibility
Access to the Drop-Off Facility is restricted to authorized users. Annual permits are required for all vehicles entering the site. These permits must be purchased in person at the facility. To obtain a permit, individuals must provide:
- Proof of Residency: A valid driver’s license with a Manchester address, or a photo ID accompanied by a recent utility bill, lease agreement, or tax bill.
- Commercial Users: Businesses and non-profits operating within Manchester must provide a business license or relevant contract documentation.
Accepted and Prohibited Items
The facility accepts a wide range of materials, often subject to disposal fees based on the type and weight of the load. Accepted items include construction and demolition debris, bulky items (furniture, mattresses), automotive batteries, tires, waste oil, electronics, and scrap metal. Yard waste (leaves, grass, brush) is also accepted to be composted locally.
Strictly Prohibited Items: The facility does NOT accept asbestos, explosives, radioactive materials, or hazardous chemical waste. However, the city hosts special Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events semi-annually (typically in May and October) at this location, where residents can safely dispose of pesticides, solvents, and other dangerous household chemicals for free.
