Overview
Division of Collections
The Jersey City Division of Collections, widely known as the Tax Collector’s Office, acts as the primary financial intake center for the municipal government. Located within City Hall, this division is responsible for the billing, collection, and enforcement of property taxes, payroll taxes, and payments related to tax abatements (PILOT programs). The office operates under strict statutory guidelines set by the State of New Jersey to ensure the financial stability of the city.
Property Tax Deadlines
Property tax bills are issued annually, with quarterly installments due on:
- February 1st
- May 1st
- August 1st
- November 1st
The city offers a 10-day grace period. Payments received after the grace period are subject to interest charges calculated from the original due date. Postmarks are not accepted as proof of payment date; funds must be physically received by the office.
Tax Liens and Sales
Unpaid taxes, water, and sewer charges are subject to enforcement through an annual Tax Sale. If charges remain delinquent by the 11th month of the fiscal year (typically November), the city places a lien on the property. These liens are auctioned to third-party investors, who pay the debt in exchange for the right to earn interest on the redemption. Property owners must then redeem the lien by paying the full amount plus interest and penalties to prevent foreclosure.
Payment Options
Residents can pay taxes via an online portal, by mail (check or money order), or in person at City Hall. For those paying in person, it is recommended to bring the entire tax bill for receipt stamping. The division also manages the Senior Freeze (PTR) verification and deductions for qualified veterans and senior citizens.
