Overview
Transit Law Enforcement
The NJ Transit Police Department – District 2 is a specialized law enforcement unit headquartered at Newark Penn Station on Raymond Plaza West. This district is part of the only transit policing agency in the country with statewide authority. District 2 officers are specifically tasked with patrolling and securing Newark Penn Station, the Newark Light Rail system, the Ferry Street Bus Complex, and the Irvington Bus Terminal. Their primary mission is to ensure the safety of the thousands of commuters who pass through these major transportation hubs daily, deterring crime and responding to emergencies within the transit network.
Commuter Safety and Services
Officers in this district maintain a visible presence on platforms, in waiting areas, and aboard trains and buses. They handle a wide range of incidents, from disorderly conduct and fare evasion to medical emergencies and serious crimes. The department utilizes K-9 units and counter-terrorism measures to protect critical infrastructure. For the public, the police presence provides a point of contact for reporting suspicious activity or seeking assistance. Commuters can also utilize the Text-to-Tip service to report non-emergency issues discreetly.
Operations and Contact
While the station operates 24/7, administrative inquiries or requests for police reports are typically handled through the central records division or during standard business hours. District 2 works in close coordination with the Newark Police Division and Amtrak Police, who also have jurisdiction within Penn Station. In the event of an emergency, commuters should dial 911 or contact the Central Communications Center directly. The district also engages in community outreach to promote rail safety awareness.
