Overview
IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center
Face-to-Face Tax Help
The Albany Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC), located in the Leo W. O’Brien Federal Building on Clinton Avenue, provides in-person support for tax issues that cannot be resolved online or over the phone. This office acts as a local resource for the Internal Revenue Service, serving taxpayers in the Capital Region. Unlike the main processing centers, this facility is designed for specific administrative tasks and inquiries.
- Appointment Policy: Service at this location is by appointment only. Taxpayers must call 844-545-5640 to schedule a visit; walk-ins are generally not accepted for service.
- ITIN Services: The center processes Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) applications, verifying original documents so they do not need to be mailed to the IRS.
- Payments: Staff accept check, money order, or exact cash payments for tax debts. Note that no change is provided for cash transactions.
- Tax Law Assistance: While they do not prepare tax returns for free (that is handled by VITA sites), they provide basic procedural guidance, account adjustments, and help with notices/levies.
Security and Access
As a federal facility, strict security measures are enforced. All visitors must pass through airport-style security screening and present valid government-issued identification. The entrance is located at 11A Clinton Avenue, near the intersection with North Pearl Street.
