About State Board Of Medicine
The State Board of Medicine is a key regulatory body within the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs (BPOA) under the Pennsylvania Department of State. Located at the CoPA Hub Building (2525 North 7th Street) in Harrisburg, the Board is responsible for protecting the health and safety of citizens by regulating the practice of medicine. It oversees the licensure, discipline, and registration of medical doctors (MDs), physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other allied health professionals.
Licensure and Services
The Board’s primary function is to process applications and renewals for medical licenses. Most of these services are handled through the Pennsylvania Licensing System (PALS) online portal. Services include:
- License Application & Renewal: For MDs, acupuncturists, genetic counselors, and more.
- Disciplinary Action: Investigating complaints and taking action against practitioners who violate the Medical Practice Act.
- Verification: Providing license verification for professionals moving to other jurisdictions.
Visiting the Board
While the majority of business is conducted online or via mail, the Board’s physical office is in the Department of State’s facility on North 7th Street. Visitors should be aware that this is a secure government building. Security screening is required for entry, and visitors must present valid photo identification.
