Overview
Administrative Hub of the Judiciary
The Pennsylvania Judicial Center is the central administrative headquarters for the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania. Opened in 2009, this state-of-the-art facility consolidates various judicial offices that were previously scattered across Harrisburg. It houses the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC), which manages the fiscal, personnel, and policy functions of the state court system. The building also serves as the Harrisburg home for the Commonwealth Court (ID: 34), the Superior Court, and the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania’s filing offices.
Architecture and Design
Designed by the firm Vitetta, the Judicial Center blends classical and modern architectural elements to complement the nearby State Capitol. The structure includes a nine-story tower and a five-story wing, clad in limestone and glass. The design prioritizes security and efficiency, featuring secure circulation paths for judges and staff, separate from public areas. The building is a key component of the Capitol Complex, reflecting the independence and stature of the judicial branch of government.
Services and Departments
Within the Judicial Center, visitors can access the Prothonotary offices for Pennsylvania’s appellate courts. The facility handles the filing of legal documents, case management, and public record requests for the Supreme, Superior, and Commonwealth Courts. Additionally, it hosts the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners and the Disciplinary Board, overseeing the admission and conduct of attorneys in the Commonwealth.
Security and Access
As a high-profile government building, the Pennsylvania Judicial Center maintains rigorous security standards. All visitors must undergo screening at the main entrance on Commonwealth Avenue. The facility is equipped with advanced surveillance and access control systems. While the building is open to the public for filing and court business, many administrative areas are restricted to authorized personnel only. Underground parking is reserved for staff, but public parking is available in nearby Capitol Complex garages.
