Support for Those Who Served
Center Overview
The Harrisburg Vet Center is a community-based counseling center operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Located on North 2nd Street in Harrisburg, it provides a broad range of social and psychological services to eligible Veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve components, and their families. Unlike a VA Medical Center, the Vet Center offers a non-medical, confidential environment focused on readjustment counseling. The goal is to help those who have served transition successfully from military to civilian life and cope with the unique challenges of military service.
Counseling and Services
- Readjustment Counseling: Individual and group therapy for transitioning to civilian life.
- Trauma Support: Specialized counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
- MST Counseling: Support for survivors of military sexual trauma.
- Family Services: Marriage and family counseling related to military lifestyle issues.
- Referral Services: Connecting veterans with VA benefits, employment assistance, and community resources.
Accessibility and Cost
All services at the Harrisburg Vet Center are provided at no cost to the veteran or their family. Strict confidentiality is maintained, and records are kept separate from standard VA medical files. The center is located in a convenient urban setting with accessible hours, including some evenings, to accommodate working veterans. Appointments are required for most counseling sessions, but the staff is dedicated to removing barriers to care for those in need.
