Overview
Law Enforcement and Court Security
The Dauphin County Sheriff’s Office, located within the Dauphin County Courthouse in downtown Harrisburg, is a critical arm of the county’s judicial system. Led by the elected Sheriff, this department is responsible for maintaining order and security within the court facilities, ensuring the safety of judges, staff, and the public. The Sheriff’s deputies also handle the transportation of prisoners between correctional facilities and the courthouse for hearings, as well as the service of civil process documents, such as subpoenas, protection from abuse orders, and levies on personal property.
Firearms Licensing (LTCF)
One of the most frequent public services provided by this office is the issuance of the Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms (LTCF). Residents of Dauphin County must apply in person at the Sheriff’s Office for new licenses or renewals. Important: While the office hours are standard, applications for firearms licenses are typically not accepted after 3:30 PM to allow for processing time. Applicants must provide a valid driver’s license with their current address and may be subject to a background check through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS).
Sheriff’s Sales and Warrants
The Sheriff’s Office conducts monthly sales of real estate and personal property to satisfy unpaid judgments or mortgage foreclosures. These Sheriff’s Sales are public auctions, usually held in the administration building or courthouse. The department also executes bench warrants issued by the courts for individuals who have failed to appear for hearings or pay fines. Visitors to the Sheriff’s Office must pass through rigorous courthouse security, including metal detectors. Electronic devices may be restricted, and weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited unless authorized.
- Firearms Permits: Issuance of concealed carry licenses for eligible county residents.
- Court Security: Protecting the courthouse complex and maintaining courtroom decorum.
- Warrant Service: Apprehending individuals with outstanding bench warrants.
- Civil Process: Serving legal documents and executing Sheriff’s Sales.
