Overview
Advocacy and Policy Advisor
The Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs serves as the primary liaison between the Governor’s Office and the African American community in Pennsylvania. Functioning as an executive commission, its mission is to ensure that state government is accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of African American residents. The Commission advises the Governor on policies, legislation, and programs that impact the community, ranging from economic development and education to health equity and criminal justice reform.
Community Engagement
Commissioners are appointed by the Governor to represent diverse backgrounds and regions across the Commonwealth. They work to gather information on local issues, disseminate information about state programs, and facilitate partnerships between government agencies and community-based organizations. The Commission actively promotes the cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans in Pennsylvania through various events and initiatives.
Location and Access
The Commission’s administrative office is typically located within the Main Capitol Building complex in Harrisburg. Visitors to the Capitol must undergo security screening at public entrances, including metal detectors and bag checks. As an advisory body, the Commission generally operates during standard state business hours, though commissioners often attend community events outside of these times. Visitors wishing to meet with staff are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance.
