Monitoring Pennsylvania’s Roads
Center Overview
The Pennsylvania Statewide Traffic Management Center (STMC) is the nerve center for the state’s transportation network. Co-located with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) on Elmerton Avenue in Harrisburg, this facility operates 24/7 to monitor traffic conditions, coordinate incident responses, and manage intelligent transportation systems (ITS) across the Commonwealth. The STMC serves as the central hub for the 511PA system, providing real-time travel information to the public while working directly with first responders and PennDOT districts to clear accidents and manage congestion efficiently.
Operational Functions
- Traffic Monitoring: Utilizing a vast network of CCTV cameras and sensors to detect flow and incidents.
- Incident Management: Coordinating with police, fire, and EMS to manage highway emergencies.
- Traveler Information: Disseminating alerts via dynamic message signs (DMS) and the 511PA app.
- Winter Operations: Tracking snow plow fleets and road conditions during severe weather events.
- Emergency Coordination: Serving as the transportation liaison desk at the PEMA State Emergency Operations Center.
Public Interaction
The STMC is a secure operational facility housed within the PEMA headquarters. It is not open to the public for tours or walk-in inquiries. The best way for the public to interact with the services provided by the STMC is through the 511PA website and mobile application. For administrative matters or official inquiries, contact should be made through PennDOT’s press office or the main PEMA telephone line. The building itself is a high-security government installation requiring strict access control.
