Overview
Pennsylvania Capitol Police
The Pennsylvania Capitol Police is a specialized law enforcement agency under the Department of General Services. Headquartered in the East Wing of the State Capitol Complex, its primary mission is to protect the safety and security of state officials, employees, and visitors within the Capitol Complex and other state-owned properties in Harrisburg and Scranton. Established in 1895, it is one of the oldest state police organizations in the country.
Jurisdiction and Duties
Unlike municipal police, the Capitol Police have a specific focus on state government operations.
- Facility Protection: Provides visible patrols and security presence inside and outside state office buildings to deter crime and manage disturbances.
- Dignitary Protection: Ensures the safety of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and other high-ranking officials.
- Investigations: Conducts criminal investigations into incidents that occur on state property.
- Crowd Control: Manages security for the frequent protests, rallies, and special events that take place on the Capitol steps and grounds.
Public Services
The Capitol Police also handle parking enforcement within the complex and provide emergency assistance to visitors. Their headquarters in the East Wing is accessible to the public, primarily for administrative matters or to report issues directly related to the Capitol grounds. They work closely with the Harrisburg Bureau of Police and the Pennsylvania State Police to ensure a coordinated response to emergencies.
