Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets
Supporting the Working Landscape
The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) is the executive state agency responsible for sustaining Vermont’s agricultural community and protecting the public health. Headquartered at 116 State Street in Montpelier, the Agency occupies a historic Romanesque Revival building that formerly served as the home of National Life Insurance. The Agency develops and executes policy on farming, agriculture, and food production, playing a critical role in the state’s economy and cultural identity. From regulating the iconic dairy and maple industries to ensuring water quality in the Lake Champlain basin, VAAFM is deeply integrated into the daily life of the Green Mountain State 🧀🍁.
Regulatory and Developmental Functions
The Agency operates through several key divisions, including Agricultural Development, which helps local producers access regional and global markets, and Food Safety and Consumer Protection, which oversees meat inspection, dairy quality, and weights and measures. A major focus of the Agency is the administration of the Required Agricultural Practices (RAPs) to mitigate agricultural runoff and improve soil health. The Agency also manages the Vermont Seal of Quality program, certifying that products meet rigorous state standards. Through the Working Lands Enterprise Initiative, the Agency provides funding to forestry and farm businesses to spur innovation and growth 🚜🔬.
- Food Safety: Inspection of meat, poultry, and dairy products.
- Water Quality: Enforcement of nutrient management and runoff regulations.
- Animal Health: Monitoring and preventing livestock diseases.
- Consumer Protection: Calibration of gas pumps and grocery scales.
Headquarters and Access
The Agency’s main office in Montpelier is a hub for licensing, permitting, and resource management. Farmers, producers, and the public interact with the Agency for everything from hemp registration to pesticide applicator licenses. The building itself is a landmark in the capital complex, located just down the street from the State House. The Agency works closely with federal partners like the USDA to implement conservation programs and support the state’s diverse agricultural output, which ranges from artisan cheese and craft beer to specialty crops and timber products 📉🏢.
