Overview
Vermont Board of Nursing
The Vermont Board of Nursing is a regulatory body operating within the Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) under the Vermont Secretary of State. Located in Montpelier, VT, the Board’s primary mission is to protect the public health, safety, and welfare by ensuring that all nursing practitioners in the state are qualified and competent. The Board oversees the licensure and regulation of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs).
Licensure and Renewal
The Board manages the entire lifecycle of nursing credentials in Vermont. This includes the initial application for licensure by examination (NCLEX) or endorsement for nurses moving from other states. Vermont is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), allowing eligible nurses to hold a multistate license.
- Online Services: All license applications and renewals are processed through the OPR online platform.
- Renewal Cycles: Licenses must be renewed every two years, with specific continuing education and active practice hour requirements.
- Verification: Employers and the public can verify the status of a nursing license in real-time.
Regulation and Education
Beyond licensing, the Board investigates complaints regarding unprofessional conduct and takes disciplinary action when necessary. It also approves and monitors nursing education programs within Vermont to ensure they meet state standards. The Board is composed of governor-appointed members, including registered nurses, practical nurses, and public members, who meet regularly to adjudicate cases and discuss regulatory policy.
