VT Division for Historic Preservation
Stewardship of History
The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation (VDHP), located within the National Life building complex in Montpelier, is the state agency dedicated to identifying, preserving, and interpreting Vermont’s cultural heritage. As part of the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, the Division serves as a resource for property owners, communities, and researchers interested in the rich history of the Green Mountain State. Their mission is to foster an appreciation of history through the stewardship of historic sites and the administration of preservation programs.
Key Programs and Services
- State-Owned Historic Sites: The Division manages and operates a system of state historic sites, including the Bennington Battle Monument and the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site, ensuring these treasures remain accessible to the public.
- National Register of Historic Places: Staff assist property owners in nominating eligible properties to the National Register, providing recognition and access to preservation incentives.
- Roadside Historic Markers: The Division oversees the iconic green and gold cast-aluminum markers found throughout the state, which commemorate significant people, events, and places in Vermont’s history.
- Tax Credits and Grants: They administer federal and state rehabilitation tax credits and preservation grants to encourage the revitalization of historic buildings and village centers.
- Archaeology: The State Archaeologist works to identify and protect Vermont’s archaeological resources, offering guidance on development projects and research.
Visiting the Office
The administrative offices are situated on the 6th floor of the Deane C. Davis Building at National Life Drive. As this is a secure state government facility, visitors must have a scheduled appointment and will be required to show valid identification and pass through security screening upon arrival. Much of the Division’s research material, including the Vermont Historic Sites and Structures Survey, is available for public inquiry, often by appointment or through their online portals.
