Overview
Waste Management and Prevention Division
The Waste Management and Prevention Division (WMPD) is a specialized branch of the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), located at the National Life complex in Montpelier. This state agency is tasked with overseeing the safe handling, treatment, and disposal of solid and hazardous wastes. The division ensures compliance with state and federal environmental laws, aiming to reduce waste generation and protect Vermont’s natural resources and public health.
Programs and Services
- Solid Waste and Recycling: Implementing Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law (Act 148), managing landfill certifications, and promoting composting and waste reduction.
- Hazardous Waste Management: Regulating the storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous materials to prevent environmental contamination.
- Brownfields and Contaminated Sites: Overseeing the cleanup and redevelopment of properties contaminated by hazardous substances (BRELLA program).
- Spill Response: Managing the state’s 24-hour response to hazardous material spills and releases.
- Underground Storage Tanks: regulating the installation and monitoring of fuel storage tanks to prevent leaks into groundwater.
Office Policies
The division operates out of the Davis Building at 1 National Life Drive. As the office is not continuously staffed for walk-in traffic, visitors are strictly required to make an appointment before arriving. The facility is part of a larger state government complex with ample parking and security protocols in place. Most permitting and reporting services are also available through their online portals.
