Overview
Vermont Weights and Measures
Consumer Protection and Fairness
The Weights and Measures Section, a division of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets, is headquartered at 116 State Street. This office plays a critical role in the state’s economy by ensuring equity in the marketplace. By regulating commercial weighing and measuring devices, the agency protects both buyers and sellers from unfair practices and financial loss due to inaccurate measurements.
Inspection and Regulation
The office coordinates a statewide inspection program covering a vast array of commercial devices and products:
- Retail Devices: Testing accuracy of grocery scales, gas pumps, and retail scanners.
- Fuel Delivery: Verifying meters on home heating oil and propane delivery trucks.
- Product Standards: Enforcing regulations on firewood volume, package labeling, and method of sale.
- Licensing: Managing licenses for weighing and measuring devices used in commerce.
Location and Access
The office is housed in a historic Romanesque Revival building across from the State House. While the primary function involves field inspectors traveling throughout Vermont, the Montpelier office handles administration, licensing, and consumer complaints. Visitors to the building should be aware of security protocols, as it is a state government facility. The agency also operates the State Metrology Laboratory, though that facility is located separately.
