Overview
Support for Vulnerable Residents
The Bridgeport Police Department CARES Unit (often associated with Elderly Services and Victim Advocacy) is a specialized section within the Community Services Division. Located at 1395 Sylvan Avenue, this unit is dedicated to protecting and assisting the city’s most vulnerable populations, particularly senior citizens and victims of crime. The ”CARES” designation reflects the department’s commitment to compassionate policing and community support. Officers and civilian staff here work to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the elderly, providing resources to prevent elder abuse, fraud, and exploitation. They also offer follow-up support to victims of traumatic crimes, helping them navigate the criminal justice system and access necessary social services.
Senior Safety and Triad
A primary focus of this unit is the safety of Bridgeport’s senior community. The department actively participates in the Triad program, a partnership between law enforcement, senior citizens, and community groups aimed at reducing criminal victimization of the elderly. Services include safety talks at senior centers, well-being checks, and the distribution of information regarding current scams targeting older adults. The unit also manages the ”File of Life” program, which helps seniors organize their medical information for first responders. Residents can contact this office to request a welfare check on an elderly neighbor or family member who may be at risk.
Facility and Access
The unit operates out of the Community Services facility in the North End, separate from the main Police Headquarters downtown. This location is designed to be more accessible and less intimidating for the public. Visitors arriving for appointments or to seek assistance must adhere to standard police facility protocols. Prohibited items include weapons and recording devices. Visitors should bring valid identification and be prepared to sign in at the front desk. The building is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that the senior population it serves can enter safely. Parking is available in the adjacent lot.
