About the Chicago Passport Agency
The Chicago Passport Agency is a specialized facility operated by the U.S. Department of State. It primarily serves U.S. citizens who have urgent international travel plans within 14 calendar days or need to obtain a foreign visa within 28 calendar days. Unlike standard passport acceptance facilities (such as post offices), this agency provides expedited passport processing for life-or-death emergencies and urgent business or personal travel.
Services and Requirements
- Expedited Passport Issuance: Processing for new passports and renewals for travelers with immediate departure dates.
- Life-or-Death Emergencies: Specialized assistance for citizens who must travel internationally within 72 hours due to a qualifying emergency.
- Appointment Only: This facility does not accept walk-ins. All visitors must schedule an appointment through the National Passport Information Center.
Security and Visit Policies
Located in the Ida B. Wells Federal Building, the agency maintains strict federal security protocols. All visitors must pass through security screening involving metal detectors and X-ray machines. Weapons of any kind, food, and beverages are strictly prohibited. While cell phones are generally permitted, they must be silenced, and photography is restricted in certain areas. Visitors should arrive no more than 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time to avoid overcrowding.
Location and Transit
The agency is situated in the South Loop area of Chicago. It is easily accessible via public transportation, including the CTA Blue Line (LaSalle station) and Red Line (Harrison station), as well as multiple bus routes serving the Congress Parkway and State Street corridors.
