Overview
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) – Appeals and Chief Counsel
The IRS office at 200 West Adams Street in Chicago houses the Independent Office of Appeals and the Office of Chief Counsel. Unlike a Taxpayer Assistance Center, this facility focuses on resolving tax disputes and providing legal advice to the IRS. The Office of Appeals provides an independent venue for taxpayers to resolve tax controversies without litigation, ensuring a fair and impartial review of their cases.
Department Functions
- IRS Independent Office of Appeals: Reviews cases involving examination, collection, and penalty appeals to reach a settlement outside of court.
- Office of Chief Counsel: Serves as the legal advisor to the IRS Commissioner and represents the IRS in the U.S. Tax Court.
