Overview
Regional Waste and Recycling Services
The Hatch Hill Solid Waste Disposal Facility is the primary landfill and recycling center for the City of Augusta and its surrounding region. Unlike a standard municipal dump, Hatch Hill operates as a regional utility through contractual agreements with eight neighboring communities: Chelsea, Farmingdale, Gardiner, Hallowell, Manchester, Pittston, Randolph, and Whitefield. The facility is managed by the Augusta Public Works Department and provides a regulated environment for the disposal of residential trash, demolition debris, and specialized waste streams.
Permits and Access
Access to Hatch Hill is strictly controlled.
- Permit Required: All vehicles entering the facility must display a valid Hatch Hill permit sticker. These can be purchased at the facility’s scale house or at Augusta City Hall (Tax Collector’s Office).
- Residency Rules: Permits are only issued to residents and businesses within Augusta and the contracting communities. Proof of residency (such as a vehicle registration or tax bill) is required.
- One-Day Passes: Temporary passes may be available for short-term needs, but users should verify availability before arrival.
Recycling and Disposal Options
Hatch Hill offers comprehensive waste management services.
Single-Stream Recycling
Residents can dispose of recyclable materials (paper, plastics, glass, metal cans) without sorting them. This service is typically included with the permit or offered at a reduced cost compared to trash tipping fees to encourage recycling.
Specialized Items
The facility accepts tires, appliances (white goods), scrap metal, and demolition debris for specific fees. It is also a collection point for Universal Waste (such as fluorescent bulbs and mercury-containing devices) which must not be thrown in regular trash.
Operating Schedule and Rules
The facility operates on a Tuesday through Saturday schedule, remaining closed on Sundays and Mondays. This schedule is designed to accommodate weekend cleaning projects for residents. Visitors should weigh in at the scale house upon arrival.
Important Note on Payments: Users should be prepared to pay via credit or debit card. Cash transactions may be limited or restricted depending on current city policies.
