Promoting Transparency in Healthcare Costs and Quality
Organization Overview
The Maine Health Data Organization (MHDO) is an independent executive agency of the State of Maine, established by the legislature in 1996. Headquartered at 151 Capitol Street in Augusta, the MHDO is responsible for creating and maintaining a comprehensive health information data warehouse. Its primary mission is to collect, process, and release clinical and financial healthcare data to the public. By doing so, the MHDO aims to improve the health of Maine citizens and promote transparency regarding the cost and quality of healthcare services across the state.
Data Services and Public Resources
The MHDO manages a vast repository of data, including the All Payer Claims Database (APCD), hospital encounter data, and quality metrics. This data powers several key initiatives:
- CompareMaine: The organization operates the CompareMaine website, a consumer-facing tool that allows residents to compare the costs of medical procedures at different facilities across the state.
- Data Release: Researchers, policy makers, and healthcare providers can request access to specific datasets to analyze trends, costs, and health outcomes.
- Hospital Financials: The MHDO collects and publishes standardized financial reports from hospitals, ensuring fiscal accountability within the healthcare system.
Visiting and Contact
The MHDO offices are located in a professional building near the State House complex. The office is open to the public Monday through Friday, starting at 8:30 AM. Visitors can access the office to file data requests or attend public board meetings. As a state agency, visitors should be prepared for professional office protocols. Parking is available nearby, and the location is accessible via public transit.
