Overview
About CMRPC
The Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission (CMRPC) is the designated regional planning agency serving Worcester and 39 surrounding communities in the southern two-thirds of Worcester County. Established to foster cooperation among municipalities, the commission works to address challenges that cross city and town borders. The agency provides technical expertise and data-driven solutions to improve the quality of life, economic vitality, and environmental sustainability of the region.
Key Planning Areas
CMRPC focuses its efforts on several critical sectors of regional development:
- Transportation: Acting as the staff for the Central Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization (CMMPO), the agency plans for future transit needs, highway improvements, and bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure.
- Land Use and Environment: Assisting towns with zoning bylaws, master plans, and environmental impact assessments to ensure sustainable growth.
- GIS and Data Services: providing advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and demographic data analysis to support local government decision-making.
- Community Development: Helping municipalities access grant funding, manage housing programs, and implement economic development strategies.
Governance and Membership
The commission is governed by delegates from each of its member communities, ensuring that both small towns and the City of Worcester have a voice in regional policies. Regular meetings are held to discuss transportation improvement programs (TIP), regional long-range plans, and shared service initiatives. The CMRPC office in downtown Worcester serves as the hub for these collaborative efforts.
