About the Essex County Correctional Facility
The Essex County Correctional Facility (ECCF), located at 354 Doremus Avenue, is the largest county jail in New Jersey. Managed by the Essex County Department of Corrections, this state-of-the-art facility houses adult male and female inmates, including pre-trial detainees, those serving short county sentences, and federal detainees (including ICE). The facility is designed with a focus on direct supervision, maximizing safety for both staff and inmates while offering various rehabilitative programs.
Visiting Policies
Visitation at ECCF is subject to strict regulations. Visits are typically divided by housing unit (e.g., Buildings 2 & 5 on Wednesdays/Saturdays, Buildings 3 & 4 on Thursdays/Sundays). All visitors must present valid government ID.
- Dress Code: Strictly enforced. Prohibited items include orange or khaki clothing (resembling inmate uniforms), spandex, ripped jeans, open-toe shoes, and underwire bras (which trigger metal detectors).
- Search Procedures: All visitors pass through metal detectors and may be subject to pat-downs. Lockers are available for personal items like keys and wallets, as they are not allowed in the visiting area.
Inmate Accounts and Mail
Funds can be deposited into an inmate’s commissary account via a kiosk in the lobby (accepting cash and cards) or online through approved third-party vendors (like GTL/Viapath). Mail sent to inmates must be plain, without stickers, perfume, or lipstick, and should include the inmate’s full name and SBI number. Books must be softcover and come directly from a publisher or retailer.
