Overview
University Law Enforcement
The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) – Newark Division provides comprehensive law enforcement and security services to the Rutgers-Newark campus and the surrounding community. Operating out of its headquarters at 5 Bruce Street, the department is a fully empowered police agency. Its commissioned officers possess statewide police authority and are trained to the same standards as municipal police officers. The RUPD is dedicated to creating a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors through active patrol, crime prevention, and community engagement.
Services and Safety
The department offers a variety of services designed to enhance personal safety on campus.
- Escort Service: Safety escorts are available to walk students and staff to their vehicles, residence halls, or mass transit stops, particularly during evening hours.
- Emergency Response: The RUPD Communications Center operates 24/7 to handle 911 calls and coordinate emergency medical or fire response.
- Community Policing: Officers work closely with student groups and university departments to provide safety seminars and self-defense training.
Jurisdiction and Access
While the RUPD's primary focus is the university footprint, their jurisdiction extends to the immediate streets and neighborhoods surrounding the campus. They work in close partnership with the Newark Police Division and NJIT Police. The police headquarters is open 24 hours a day for walk-in reports and assistance. Emergency phones ('Blue Lights') located throughout the campus connect directly to the RUPD dispatch.
