Trenton City Hall Overview
Trenton City Hall serves as the administrative center for the City of Trenton, the state capital of New Jersey. Located at 319 East State Street, this historic Beaux-Arts structure, completed in 1910, houses the Office of the Mayor, the City Council, and various municipal departments dedicated to public service. The building is a central hub for residents to access essential government records, pay municipal taxes, and participate in local governance through public meetings.
Key City Departments and Services
City Hall concentrates several vital administrative offices in one location, offering the following services:
- City Clerk’s Office: Handles Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requests, issues business licenses, and maintains official city records and ordinances.
- Vital Statistics: Residents can obtain certified copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates here. It is the primary office for applying for marriage licenses within the city.
- Tax Collector: The Tax Office accepts payments for property taxes and water/sewer bills. They also provide information regarding tax liens and assessments.
- Department of Health: Oversees public health initiatives, environmental inspections, and certain community services.
Important Note on Municipal Court
Please be aware that the Trenton Municipal Court is not located at City Hall. Traffic tickets, criminal disputes, and court hearings are handled at the Public Safety Building located at 225 North Clinton Avenue. Do not come to City Hall for court appearances or to pay traffic fines unless directed otherwise.
Visiting and Security
The building is open to the public during standard business hours. Visitors should be prepared for security screening upon entry, including passing through metal detectors. Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited. While cell phones are generally permitted, they should be silenced during City Council meetings or while at service windows. Metered street parking is available along East State Street and surrounding blocks, though it can be limited. Several paid parking garages are located within walking distance for longer visits.
