Trenton Treasurer’s Office Overview
The City of Trenton Treasurer’s Office is a key division within the Department of Finance, acting as the custodian of all municipal funds. Located in Trenton City Hall at 319 East State Street, the Treasurer is responsible for the management, investment, and disbursement of city monies. Unlike the Tax Collector, who is responsible for receiving tax payments from the public, the Treasurer primarily manages the city’s banking relationships, cash flow, and debt service obligations, ensuring the fiscal stability of the local government.
Core Responsibilities
The Treasury Division handles several critical financial functions that keep the city operational:
- Cash Management: Monitors daily cash balances and ensures that funds are available to meet the city’s financial commitments, such as vendor payments and payroll.
- Debt Management: Administers the payment of principal and interest on the city’s bond debt and notes.
- Reconciliation: Performs monthly reconciliations of all city bank accounts to ensure accuracy and accountability in financial reporting.
- Disbursements: Oversees the release of checks and electronic payments to vendors, contractors, and city employees.
Visiting the Office
While most residents interact with the Tax Collector or Tax Assessor, vendors and individuals with specific financial business regarding city payments may need to contact the Treasurer. As this office is located within City Hall, all visitors must pass through security screening at the main entrance, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. A valid photo ID is generally required to enter the building’s upper floors where administrative offices are located. Public parking is available via metered street spots or nearby paid garages.
