Ann Klein Forensic Center Overview
The Ann Klein Forensic Center (AKFC), located in West Trenton, is New Jersey’s only specialized forensic psychiatric hospital. This 200-bed facility operates under the management of the New Jersey Department of Health, specifically the Division of Behavioral Health Services. Unlike a standard medical hospital, AKFC serves a unique population of individuals who have a legal status combined with severe mental illness. The facility provides evaluation and treatment for patients who have been found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) or who have been deemed Incompetent to Stand Trial (IST) and require restoration to competency. Additionally, it accepts transfers of inmates from state and county correctional facilities who require acute psychiatric care that cannot be managed in a jail setting.
Security and Admissions
Due to the legal status of its patient population, the Ann Klein Forensic Center functions with a level of security comparable to a correctional facility. The perimeter is secured, and internal movement is strictly controlled. Admissions are almost exclusively court-ordered or transfers from other secure institutions; the facility does not accept walk-in patients or voluntary admissions from the general public. The primary goal of the center is to stabilize patients and, where applicable, restore them to legal competency so they can proceed with their judicial process, or to treat them until they can be safely managed in a less restrictive setting.
Treatment Approach
The center employs a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and rehabilitation therapists. Treatment plans are individualized and often include medication management, group therapy, and legal education designed to help patients understand court procedures (competency restoration). The facility emphasizes a balance between security/public safety and a therapeutic hospital environment, aiming to rehabilitate patients while ensuring they do not pose a danger to themselves or others.
Visiting Policies
Visiting a patient at the Ann Klein Forensic Center is a strictly regulated process. All visitors must be on an approved list authorized by the patient’s treatment team. Upon arrival at 1609 Stuyvesant Avenue, visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification. The facility enforces a rigorous dress code (no revealing clothing, no uniforms that resemble staff/inmate attire) and a strict contraband policy. Mobile phones, cameras, recording devices, tobacco products, lighters, and sharp objects are absolutely prohibited inside the secure perimeter. Visitors are subject to metal detector screening and potential pat-down searches. It is crucial to contact the social services department in advance to confirm visiting hours and eligibility.
Location and Access
The facility is situated in a quiet area of West Trenton, adjacent to the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital complex but operating independently. It is accessible via public transportation, with NJ Transit bus stops located along Stuyvesant Avenue. For those driving, a free parking lot is available for visitors and staff. The center ensures accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
