Superior Court Clerk’s Office Overview
The Superior Court Clerk’s Office (SCCO) serves as the central administrative and filing authority for the Superior Court of New Jersey. Located within the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton, this office manages statewide judicial functions rather than county-specific matters. It is the primary repository for statewide records and plays a pivotal role in the processing of specific legal actions that affect parties across New Jersey. Unlike county clerks who handle local land records, the SCCO focuses on high-level court administration, ensuring the integrity of the judiciary’s records and facilitating essential legal processes for attorneys and the public.
Key Services and Divisions
The SCCO operates several specialized units designed to handle distinct administrative tasks:
- Foreclosure Processing: The Office of Foreclosure, under the SCCO, reviews and manages uncontested foreclosure actions for residential and commercial properties statewide.
- Judgment Liens: The Judgment Unit records and maintains a statewide docket of civil judgments, including liens, ensuring they are properly indexed and searchable.
- Bail Surety Program: This unit registers bail agencies and insurance companies, overseeing the surety bond registry for the state.
- Records Retrieval: The office archives and provides access to closed Superior Court cases, allowing the public to request copies of historical court documents.
- Attorney Registration: The SCCO administers the annual registration and payment process for all attorneys licensed to practice in New Jersey.
Security and Access
Visiting the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex requires passing through rigorous security measures similar to airport screening. All visitors must undergo metal detector screening, and bags are subject to x-ray inspection. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, pepper spray, pocket knives, and sharp objects like scissors or knitting needles. While cell phones are generally permitted, they must be silenced and their use is restricted in certain areas. There is no storage available for prohibited items, so visitors should leave them at home or in their vehicles.
Location and Transit
The complex is situated at 25 Market Street, a short distance from the Trenton Transit Center. This major transportation hub provides convenient access via NJ TRANSIT trains (Northeast Corridor), the River LINE light rail, and SEPTA regional rail. Numerous NJ TRANSIT bus routes also serve the immediate area, making public transportation a practical alternative to driving, as public parking near the Justice Complex can be limited and is typically found in paid commercial garages.
