Overview
New York State Library (NYSL)
The New York State Library, located on the 7th floor of the Cultural Education Center at 222 Madison Avenue, is one of the largest and most comprehensive research libraries in North America. Serving as the primary repository for the state’s history and government records, the library holds over 20 million items, including books, manuscripts, maps, and digital collections. It is a vital resource for researchers, historians, and the general public seeking in-depth information about New York State.
Collections and Research
The library’s vast holdings are specialized in law, medicine, social sciences, education, and history. Key collections include:
- Genealogy and Local History: A premier destination for family history researchers, featuring census records, city directories, and vital records indices.
- Government Documents: As a federal depository library and the official repository for NYS documents, it houses an exhaustive collection of legislative and agency publications.
- Manuscripts and Special Collections: Rare books, letters, diaries, and maps that document the history of the state from the colonial era to the present.
Visiting the Library
Access to the research floor requires a valid New York State Library Borrower’s Card or a temporary research pass, which can be obtained at the registration desk with a photo ID. Unlike a typical public library, the NYSL is primarily a non-circulating research facility, meaning most items must be used on-site. However, residents can borrow certain materials through interlibrary loan at their local public library.
Location and Accessibility
The library is situated in the Cultural Education Center (CEC), which anchors the south end of the Empire State Plaza. The building is fully wheelchair accessible and also houses the New York State Museum and Archives. Visitors should be aware that large bags and food are typically restricted in the research areas to protect the collections. Public parking is available in the nearby cathedral lot or the V-lot visitor parking.
