New York State Police Academy
Law Enforcement Training Excellence
The New York State Police Academy, located in Building 24 of the W. Averell Harriman State Office Campus, is the premier training facility for the New York State Police (NYSP). This institution is responsible for the rigorous preparation of Trooper recruits, as well as the ongoing professional development of sworn members and civilian staff. The Academy operates as a paramilitary environment where recruits undergo a demanding 26-week Basic School curriculum that covers penal law, criminal procedure, physical fitness, emergency vehicle operations, and firearms proficiency. Beyond its primary mission of training State Troopers, the facility also hosts specialized courses for other municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies, reinforcing a standardized approach to public safety across New York.
- Basic School: A residential training program for new recruits, emphasizing discipline, ethical decision-making, and tactical skills.
- Firearms Training: Features state-of-the-art simulation systems and live-fire ranges to ensure officers are expert marksmen.
- Emergency Vehicle Operations: Instructs recruits on high-speed driving techniques, pursuit policies, and accident avoidance.
- Canine Unit Training: Serves as a regional hub for the training and certification of police working dogs in detection and patrol functions.
Campus and Operations
The Academy facility includes classrooms, a gymnasium, dormitories, and administrative offices. It is strictly a training site and not a public police station; as such, it is not open to the general public for walk-in police services or tours without prior authorization. Visitors, including guest instructors and visiting law enforcement personnel, must adhere to strict security protocols upon entering the State Office Campus. The Academy plays a pivotal role in maintaining the reputation of the ‘Gray Riders’ as one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in the nation, combining tradition with modern policing strategies.
