Overview
Bureau of Information Technology
Citywide Digital Infrastructure
The Bureau of Information Technology, historically known as Data Processing, is the technological backbone of the City of Harrisburg’s municipal government. Located within the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, this bureau is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the city’s complex digital ecosystem. The IT professionals here manage the mainframe-based systems that power essential city functions, including real estate tax billing, utility billing, and human resource management. They ensure that the city’s Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) operate securely and efficiently, connecting various departments—from Public Safety to Public Works—under a unified digital framework.
Cybersecurity and Support
In an era of increasing digital threats, the Bureau of Information Technology prioritizes cybersecurity. The team monitors the city’s networks for virus activity and cyber threats, employing central management consoles to safeguard sensitive citizen data and government records. Beyond security, the bureau provides helpdesk support for city employees, maintaining personal computers, mobile devices, and telecommunications equipment. They are also the architects behind the city’s public-facing digital services, ensuring that residents can access online payment portals, permit applications, and government transparency tools with ease and reliability.
Innovation and Modernization
The bureau is continuously evaluating emerging technologies to modernize the city’s operations. This includes the migration of legacy systems to cloud-based solutions and the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve city planning and emergency response. While this office is primarily an internal service department, its work directly impacts the quality and speed of services received by every resident and business in Harrisburg. Visitors to the Government Center generally do not interact directly with this bureau unless they are vendors or attending specific technical meetings.
