About PennDOT Headquarters
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Headquarters is located in the Keystone Building within the Harrisburg Capitol Complex. This facility serves as the central administrative hub for the state’s transportation infrastructure. Unlike a Driver License Center, this location houses the executive offices, planning divisions, and engineering departments responsible for overseeing Pennsylvania’s vast network of highways, bridges, rail lines, and airports. The staff here manages the strategic direction, funding, and policy implementation that keeps the Commonwealth moving, coordinating with eleven engineering districts across the state.
Key Departments and Functions
- Design and Construction: Planning and engineering state highway and bridge projects.
- Multimodal Transportation: Overseeing public transit, rail freight, aviation, and ports.
- Highway Administration: Managing maintenance schedules, snow removal policies, and traffic safety.
- Planning and Research: Conducting long-term transportation studies and data analysis.
- Administration: Handling procurement, human resources, and fiscal management for the department.
Important Notice
Note: This is the administrative headquarters, NOT a DMV. Driver’s license and vehicle registration services for the public are not available at this location. Citizens needing to renew a license, take a driving test, or register a vehicle should visit a PennDOT Driver License Center. The Keystone Building is a secure government facility; visitors conducting official business with administrative offices must pass through security screening and present valid identification. The Atrium of the Keystone Building occasionally hosts public events or displays related to transportation history.
