Youth Support Services
Program Overview
The Achieving Independence Center (AIC) is a vital support hub operated in partnership between the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (DHS) and Valley Youth House. Located on North Broad Street, this facility serves as a ”one-stop shop” for current and former foster youth transition to adulthood. It provides a safe, communal environment where members can access a wide range of resources designed to foster self-sufficiency and personal growth. The center is specifically dedicated to helping young people navigate the challenges of aging out of the system by connecting them with caring professionals and peer support 🤝.
Services and Eligibility
The AIC offers comprehensive services tailored to the needs of youth ages 14 to 23 who are currently or were formerly involved with Philadelphia DHS (dependent or delinquent). Key offerings include:
- Education Support: Assistance with high school completion, GED preparation, and college enrollment (including tours and financial aid guidance).
- Employment Readiness: Job search coaching, resume workshops, and career exploration programs.
- Housing Assistance: Guidance on finding stable housing and understanding tenant rights.
- Life Skills: Hands-on training in financial literacy, cooking, and health management.
To access these services, youth must generally be referred by their DHS case manager, probation officer, or social worker. The center operates on a membership basis, ensuring that resources are targeted effectively to those eligible for state-supported independent living programs 🎓.
