Apple Tree Family Center Overview
The Apple Tree Family Central Intake Center (often referred to as the Appletree Family Center) is the primary emergency access point for families experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia. Operated by the Office of Homeless Services (OHS), this facility provides immediate intake, assessment, and placement services for households with children, couples with children, and pregnant individuals 🏘️. The center’s goal is to first explore diversion strategies—helping families find safe alternatives to shelter—before authorizing entry into the city’s emergency housing system. It serves as a critical safety net, ensuring that vulnerable families have a centralized location to seek assistance during housing crises.
Intake Process and Requirements
Services are provided on a walk-in basis; however, the process is thorough and may require significant waiting time. Visitors meet with a social work services manager to complete a detailed assessment. 📋 Required Documents: To receive services, heads of household must typically present valid photo identification. Crucially, you must also provide Birth Certificates and Social Security Cards for all children/dependents to prove family relationship. Failure to have these documents can delay placement.
Security and Policies
Strict security measures are in place to ensure the safety of staff and visitors. All individuals must pass through metal detector screening upon entry. 🚫 Prohibited Items: Weapons of any kind are strictly banned. Visitors should expect bag checks. Interpretation services are available for non-English speakers.
Important Service Details
This center is specifically for families. Single men and single women have separate intake locations (Roosevelt Darby Center and Gaudenzia’s House of Passage, respectively). After business hours (5:00 PM – 7:00 AM), families needing emergency shelter should report to the Red Shield Family Residence at 715 N. Broad Street. The center acts solely as an intake and assessment hub; it is not a shelter itself where people sleep overnight.
