Overview
Mission and Greenworks
The Office of Sustainability (OOS) is the executive agency responsible for ensuring a sustainable future for Philadelphia. Headquartered in the One Parkway Building at 1515 Arch Street, the office works with partners across the city to improve the quality of life in all neighborhoods through its comprehensive sustainability framework, Greenworks Philadelphia. The office’s mandate covers a broad spectrum of environmental initiatives, including reducing the city’s carbon footprint, increasing energy efficiency in municipal buildings, managing stormwater through green infrastructure, and promoting access to healthy, affordable food. The OOS does not typically offer direct walk-in services for residents (such as permits or bill payments) but rather functions as a policy and planning hub that coordinates between various city departments, businesses, and community organizations to meet climate goals.
Key Programs and Divisions
The office manages several critical programs that impact the daily lives of Philadelphians. The Municipal Energy Office oversees the city’s energy purchases and works to reduce energy consumption in public facilities. The Climate Change Adaptation program focuses on preparing the city for extreme weather events and rising temperatures. Additionally, the office helps administer the Food Policy Advisory Council (FPAC), which strives to create a more just and sustainable food system. While the office itself is administrative, it frequently engages the public through workshops, community meetings, and the release of annual progress reports that track the city’s performance against its sustainability targets.
Location and Access
The One Parkway Building is a major municipal center housing various city agencies. Access to the building is strictly controlled. All visitors must enter through the main lobby on Arch Street and pass through security screening, which includes metal detectors and X-ray machines for bags. A valid government-issued photo identification is required to check in at the security desk and receive a visitor’s badge. Since the Office of Sustainability is primarily an administrative workspace, unsolicited walk-in visits are not standard practice; it is highly recommended to contact the office via phone or email to schedule an appointment or to find out when public hearings or meetings are being held.
Transit and Surroundings
Located diagonally across from Love Park (JFK Plaza), the office is in the heart of the city’s transit network. It is directly adjacent to Suburban Station, making it accessible via all SEPTA Regional Rail lines. The 15th Street Station for the Market-Frankford Line and Trolleys is just a block away. Numerous bus routes run along Arch Street and the surrounding grid, including Routes 2, 17, 33, and 48. For cyclists, there are bike racks nearby and Indego bike-share stations, aligning with the office’s promotion of sustainable transportation. Public parking is available in commercial garages nearby, but rates are high, and public transit is the most eco-friendly and convenient option.
