Overview
About the Economic Development Administration
The U.S. Department of Commerce – Economic Development Administration (EDA) Philadelphia Regional Office is a key federal agency located in the historic Curtis Center. 🇺🇸 This office serves as the headquarters for the EDA’s Atlantic Region, which covers 13 states (including Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland), the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The EDA’s primary mission is to foster job creation and attract private investment in economically distressed areas. 🏙️ Unlike a retail service center, this office focuses on administering federal grants and providing technical assistance to local governments, non-profits, and educational institutions to support regional economic growth and disaster recovery strategies.
Programs and Services
The Philadelphia Regional Office manages a portfolio of economic development programs. Key functions include:
- Public Works Grants: Funding for infrastructure projects that enable businesses to start or expand.
- Regional Innovation: Supporting strategies to cultivate innovation and entrepreneurship in local economies.
- Disaster Recovery: assisting communities in rebuilding and becoming more resilient after economic shocks or natural disasters.
Security and Building Access
The EDA is housed within the Curtis Center, a multi-tenant commercial building that borders Independence Square. 👮♂️ Visitors must enter through the main lobby (typically on 6th or Walnut Street) and check in at the security desk. Valid government-issued photo identification is required to be issued a visitor pass for the elevators. While the building is open to the public for its atrium and Dream Garden mosaic, access to the EDA suite on the ground or upper floors is restricted to authorized personnel and scheduled appointments. It is highly recommended to contact staff in advance, as this is an administrative headquarters rather than a walk-in service center.
